Similar to many American towns, Fairburn's settled history began as a little railroad depot in what was then Campbell County. In 1870, the county relocated its county seat to Fairburn, building its new courthouse there in the following year. Over time, the population grew, industry established itself and city limits were expanded. The buildings that were built then, in the late 19th century and early 20th century, now make up the commercial historic district of downtown Fairburn.
The architectural styles in downtown include Neoclassical, Italianate, Utilitarian and many of the historic buildings were constructed of stone. The Old Campbell County Courthouse, which ceased to be the county seat in 1932 when Campbell County became part of Fulton, is the best-known landmark in downtown. The building is maintained by the Campbell County Historical Society, which also keeps its offices at that location. Two train depots, both built of brick, also offer an interesting glimpse into the past.
The downtown area has recently been renovated and now offers retail space, home to quaint shops that boast excellent and personal customer service.
Spending time outdoors is certainly a large part of life in Fairburn. The Cochran Mill Nature Center is a great venue for walking, exploring or simply learning more about the local environment. The center, through its educational programs, promotes a greater awareness of how to care for the environment. Animals that have been abandoned or injured in the wild are taken in and used for classes and activities.
Art enthusiasts will love the active art community of nearby Atlanta. The symphony, ballet and live theater are all available at the Woodruff Arts Center. The Lakewood Amphitheater, an outdoor venue, also hosts a range of performances within driving distance from Fairburn. For exhibits and learning, the High Museum of Art and Fernbank Natural History Museum, both in Atlanta, are excellent choices.
